Discussion:  A new robot that you can wear is allowing paraplegics to walk.  The Ekso, developed by Ekso Bionics, which first started as a project for the military that allowed soldiers to lift heavy loads and walk further distances, is now enabling people with disabilities to stand upright while also enhancing their strength.  The Ekso is made up of an outer frame the mimics bone structure,  4 motors (one for each joint), 15 sensors (that basically re-create your nervous system), and a computer that acts as the brains of the operation.  Prosthetics, so far, usually only have one moving part, and the wheelchair has been around for 1,500 years.  It’s about time for some new technology for paraplegics.

Discussion Questions:

  • What else can a wearable robot help us accomplish?  Precision in surgery?
  • Why has there been such a lack in technological revelations in this field?
