n “Kinect Sesame Street TV,” characters will ask viewers questions about, say, how many coconuts are displayed.

Discussion: By using the voice recognition and motion sensor software on Microsoft’s Kinect system for Xbox, TV shows like “Sesame Street” or “Nat Geo WILD” will be able to interact with their young viewers.  The new TV/game applications will allow the preschool audience to interact without using a mouse or a complicated controller.  Characters from the shows will talk to viewers in order to encourage participation and change the viewing experience.  Shows that had been previously passively viewed will become a whole new television opportunity.

Discussion Questions:

  • If kids can interact with the shows they watch, how long before other television shows are interactive?
  • Does making TV interactive negate some of the harmful effects of TV?  Will this new development encourage kids to watch more TV?
