Using a mobile phone is likely to ease the wait in lines

Discussion: Google is introducing a mobile payment platform that will turn its Android smartphone into a digital wallet.  Thanks to NFC (near field communication) technology, consumers can wave their phones in front of a reader at a checkout to purchase items or receive special offers.  The simplicity and convenience of this new e-wallet means less trips to the ATM and consumers can see how their money is being spent on the go.  But Google isn’t the only company rolling out NFC technology, as reports indicate the iPhone 5, Blackberry, and Windows phones are not far behind.

Question for discussion:

  • What obstacles must the digital wallet overcome in order for this technology to really take off in the U.S.?
