Discussion: Black Duck Software, a company that helps automate the management, governance, and security of free and open-source software, recently announced its 2010 open-source “Rookies of the Year” list.  Evaluating the popularity of each open-source project and using a weighted scoring system, it named ten winners, including number one on the list Diaspora, an open-source social network that is a Facebook alternative.  Also on the list was SparkleShare, a file sharing and collaboration tool and RapidFTR, a mobile app that lets aid workers collect, sort, and share information about children in emergency situations.  The 2010 Rookies list is a sure sign that 2011 will be a great year for businesses to benefit from open-source solutions.
